The reason we started. Curved and cut-string staircases, stair voids, built-in joinery, brush box and blackbutt flooring — the details people run their hand along.

Staircases

A stair with curved sections, a void running the full height of a house, and a powder-coated steel balustrade is about as good as carpentry gets. The one at Emerald Beach is probably the best thing we have put in a house — a couple of curvy bits, a lot of hardwood, and steel by Barry Smith Engineering.

Hardwood flooring

Brush box and blackbutt, laid tongue and groove. We have used it to convert a garage into living space and had it read as though it had always been part of the house. Species selection, acclimatisation and set-out direction matter more than most people expect.

Built-in joinery

Benchtops, cupboard doors, floating shelves and linings. On one laundry we married a new marine ply benchtop to the existing run, made custom marine ply doors and floating shelves, dropped in the sink and tiled the splashback — a job that is all detail and no glamour.

Do you take on small jobs?

We started as carpenters and we still enjoy the smaller work — decks, staircases, a laundry, a floor. If it’s a good job with good people we’ll look at it. If we’re not the right fit we’ll tell you and point you somewhere useful.

Do you work on older homes?

Yes, and it’s some of our favourite work. The house that won us two HIA awards had bad bones and a long list of unknowns behind the linings, and several other builders had already turned it down. Older homes need a builder who prices the unknowns honestly rather than discovering them later.

How do you price a job?

We come and look at it first, always. From there you get a written, itemised quote that separates the build cost from provisional sums and prime cost items, so you can see exactly what is fixed and what still needs a decision from you. No lump-sum guesswork.
